Our objective as Early Childhood teachers is not to implement a formal reading and writing instruction program into our classroom, but instead expose our children to opportunities where they can start to develop the skills needed to be successful readers and writers. For example, recognizing that print has meaning, understanding that books contains print, receptively understanding oral instructions, begin to identify specific letters, knowing how to hold and turn pages of a book and most importantly developing a love for reading.
Our children are exposed to books multiple times throughout the day. We are constantly modifying our classroom library based on what the children are interested in. Currently, the children are enjoying books about trains and bugs. We also read to the children throughout the day individually and as a class at Morning Meeting. Many of the children will find a book and carry it over to a teacher and request them to read it or they might cuddle up with some pillows and look at the stories themselves. In addition, we have been noticing several of the children have really started to show an interest in identifying specific letters. In efforts to encourage and further along their letter identification skills, we have created a literacy table where children can look at letters collectively and individually. We have also placed an ipad in this area. Currently, the children have been watching videos of ‘real’ trains. Our goal is to start introducing some games and stories that the children can play or listen too.
